Saga: The Song of Roland

Colonel Roland Thomas waved, saw his friend off to safety before he swung around and raced to the forward most defensive positions held by Beachhead Able. Bodies, there were bodies of dead troopers everywhere, but the line was holding. “For how long?” thought Thomas. Taking stock of the situation, he saw that what had started out as three companies of about 400 men, had been pared down to half that. The Bradleys were operational but very low on fuel, probably good for another five miles if they had to bug out. The chain guns had long ago exhausted their supply of 25mm, and the nearest resupply was on the end of the freeway with the general. “No help there! Damn the luck!” The coax MG’s were still in action, and the riflemen had replenished their ammo by unburdening the dead. “Bad but not critical…yet!”

Behind him, close to 15,000 infantry were dog trotting down the freeway ramp; while at the bottom of the ramp, officers were rallying the men into defensive positions that expanded ever outwards as they were joined by more and more of their fellows from above. The young lieutenants and captains were doing their jobs splendidly. All they needed to survive was time, and Colonel Thomas was determined to give it to them.

The Bradleys at the bottom of the ramp were out of fuel now, but their guns were still in action taking a heavy toll of the massing IED’s. Humvees with mounted heavy machineguns cut swaths through the attacking ranks knocking IED's over by the dozens. Small arms fire crackled as lines of soldiers fired point blank into distorted faces and then stepped forward over sprawling convulsing bodies to make more room for their swelling ranks. Onward and outward, this was the only way. Go forward or die!

Neither side gave an inch; any progress made was because a Zombie fell and a soldier stepped into the space, and then another soldier stepped into his place. When a trooper ran out of ammo, he and the man behind him would seamlessly trade places and continue firing.

Calmly appraising the situation, the colonel thought that barring some unforeseen event, there was a good chance most of his men would slip away to safety, but only if his rearguard, Able, could keep the Zombies from taking his men at the bottom of ramp from behind. Bravo’s position was untenable if the battle had to be fought on two fronts at once.

Roland returned his attention to the M-2’s on the upper freeway. Something was different. The high cyclic rate of fire was diminishing. The chattering of the machineguns was becoming sporadic as the M-2’s exhausted their supplies of belted 7.62. In the face of the less punishing rifle fire, the IED’s began to once again close the distance, endangering the lives of the remaining infantrymen and threatening the continuity of the line.
